Fast puttering coming from engine

Well, this has been going on pretty much the whole time i have owned my car, I jsut havn't got around to solving the problem yet. I am fixing other things to narrow down that it could be.
When I am driving, and accelerate, there is a puttering that comes from somewhere. It can be heard only when I am driving and the engine is under load. It sounds like an air leak of some sort. The A.I.R tube that goes to the CAT is broke. That makes some puttering, but this has been going on before that happened. It sounds like an exhaust leak. The puttering quickens as RPMs increase. I have yet to replace the rusty CAT-back. I am hoping that is the whole problem.
It sounds too loud to be the injectors. The sounds did not get any louder, after I changed to Open Element either.

The tranny wouldn't make any puttering sounds would it? I am sure that it is made by air though. I'll do a little probing aroudn the exhaust and find out if it has any holes anywhere.

I would suggest it was your header/manifold gaskets if it is like a ticky putting noise

A disconnected air injection hose will make a noise that sounds like constant "flatulence". Check all the connections between the smog pump and the manifolds.

Well, I have tightened and retightened the header bolts many times. I usualy go through and check them once a month.
Besides that, it has been happening before I began modifying my car in any way.
There was one sparkplug that was half unscrewed from the passengers side head. I couldn't believe that one. Changing the plugs stopped a clicking that was happening while driving. The timing also stopped that.
I have some time today to look over my cat-back. I'm thinking that is my whole problem.
