Platinum Pro fuel tank FTK010434(Rock Auto)
Hey guys, got my new Trans Am home. It's been sitting for 10+ years outside.
A part of me wants to syphon the tank clean, put some fresh gas in there, jump the pump until it gets close to empty, change the fuel filter, put more gas and call it a day.
My smarter side wants to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump and strainer. I did remove the gas cap and it does smell like varnish in there sighhh. I'm thinking maybe make life easier and just replace the tank while I'm there. Stupid *******s made it so complicated to drop a tank WTF.
On Rockauto, a Platinum Pro tank (part # FTK010434) with the filler neck is significantly cheaper SHIPPED compared to a Dorman or Spectra. Does anyone have experience with this tank and filler neck? Is it **** or will it get the job done properly?
Many thanks!

All the aftermarket tanks seem to use the same mold. You find the same numbers stamped in them.
In my experience, the filler neck will be a cointoss. Too short, wrong angle... it's a PITA.

On my latest, I cleaned the tank. Pain the bud, but I think it'll be fine. At the same time, I doubt anything is getting past the strainer, pump, filter, etc. If I were doing it again, I'd be awfully tempted to just drain the tank, fill with fresh gas and drive. I'd rather run an OE tank with some age than a reproduction.
BTW there is no "siphon" the tank on thirdgens. Cant get a large enough hose down the fill neck to do any good, and the shape and baffles make it highly unlikely much will come out anyway. If the pump works, just hotwire it to empty the tank.

For sure I'd like to run the OE tank. At this point I'm more leaning towards draining it, put in a 2 gallon shot, jump pump, change the fuel filter and cross my fingers. I don't know if the pump works I removed the fuse because I didn't want to pump any garbage through the system. I'm assuming it does. The car got and oil change, he brought it home and never drove it again. This was circa May 2004 (date code on battery) - 2007. The gentleman doesn't remember the exact time.
I bought a cheap siphon on Sunday and realized it won't/can't do **** haha!

One more thing I noticed while looking around.
On Rockauto a Spectra fuel sending unit FG20A is $125
A Spectra "Pump & Sender Assembly" SP20A2H is $109
Maybe I'm missing something but for some stupid reason it's actually less to get it with the pump?? WTF lol The pics look identical except for the fact the fuel pump is in it.

Mine has been sitting 20+ years. I plan to clean it out and use Eastwoods Gas Tank Sealer. https://www.eastwood.com/ew-gas-tank...-for-cars.html

My Dorman tank was a pretty OK fit. I had to shave down the threads on the filler neck cap to fit all the way on. Otherwise no real complaints.

Has anyone used a Spectra pump? The price for hanger/sending/unit and pump is amazing. I don't mind spending a little more buy a Bosch to replace the Spectra but if there have been good experiences wouldn't mind saving some $$$

Re: Platinum Pro fuel tank FTK010434(Rock Auto)
My OE tank cracked a few weeks back. I bought a Dorman replacement tank and its been nothing but trouble. Initial issues include the filler neck being shorter than the OE tank and the filler neck being smaller in diameter than the OE tank. To get the gas cap to seal I had to significantly shave down the threads on the gas cap. The cap seals now but it still goes on pretty badly.
I could have lived with the initial issues had the tank not catastrophically failed last night. After filling the tank up yesterday I parked the car for a few hours. Later that night I was greeted to a puddle of gas on the floor under the tank. It turns out the weld on the filler neck cracked and is leaking fuel. The tank lasted all of 2 weeks before the weld broke. So I'm going to have to pull the tank AGAIN and do the job all over AGAIN. I'm trying to decide if I just want to fix the crack in my OE tank and say screw the aftermarket tank after this experience.

Wow man, that's fukking ballssss. From everything I've gathered in my few short weeks as a third gen owner it seems like stock tank is the way to go. I'll be dropping mine soon to change the fuel pump. Fingers crossed it's not crusty inside.
