Amsoil SAE 30 Break In oil for 500 miles.

After that,

Amsoil 10w40 Premium Protection. Change it every 5,000.

Get a higher zinc oil then. Rotella T at a minimum will work I like Lucas 10w-40 hotrod oil. Use what you like

The Amsoil break in has 2000 PPM zinc.

The Premium Protection has 1400.

They are designed for exactly this purpose.

I would tend toward the AMSOIL 10W-30 Z-Rod, as 10W-40 isn't required for that engine. The Z-Rod also has high ZDDP, and was specifically designed for flat tappet engines.

Remember, though, the ZDDP PPM isn't the whole story with regard to flat tappet wear protection. It's the total package that matters.

True. The Z-Rod is probably the better choice. If the engine is new then the 10w30 for sure.

I run the 10w40 in all my high mileage stuff. My Trans Am has 155k on the original 305. While it probably had *some* good maintenance it almost certainly never got any synthetic. Hadn't seen the road since 2004 when I got it in 2015 so....

Helps with consumption and keeping pressure up in older engines. The synthetics flow so much better and hold their viscosity stable much longer than conventional so using a 40 weight isn't really much different than what the 30 weight becomes toward the end of its life anyway as it tends to thicken.

We routinely run 20w50 in the high tolerance aluminium block engines. Just REALLY requires warming them up prior to driving as the main bearing clearances need stable block and oil temps to achieve proper operating clearance.

I have used both 10w30 synthetic or blend or 5w30 full synthetic on my Goodwrench with no issues at all

Either of these 10w-40 or 10w-30 had enough zddp to not need the extra break in 2100ppm.
