Thinking about ditching the MSD ignition

I am running a MSD 6A PN 6200 SN 265188 and 8360 distributor with SS coil wired exactly like the picture in the manual.
A bit ago I posted this

https://forums.msdperformance.com/sh...ues&highlight=

In march 2016 I sent in the box in with a RMA and MSD found issues and returned it to me promptly with repair fee. About June of the same year I reinstalled the box and between now and then I have driven it about 2500 miles. (NY winters) I had the car out last night and it started doing the same thing again. Inconsistent idle with the tach ticking and stumbling on acceleration low RPMs were worse.

I am going to play with it, checking wiring and normal stuff but the 6A box might go away.

Also thinking about going HEI any thoughts?

MSD has no business on anything that needs to be a reliable driver.
Yes, run the standard HEI setup. It's perfectly adequate for your setup.

Re: Thinking about ditching the MSD ignition

Nothing wrong with an HEI ignition. Best thing you can do for it though is to use an externally mounted coil.

There's nothing special about a 6A other than the multi spark feature which a stock ignition doesn't have. The 6AL gives you a high end rev limiter option which most people would never reach during normal driving operation and you need to buy the chip with the rev limit you want or at least the adjustable chip so you can easily change the limit.

If you're after a high end race ignition, the 6 isn't even in the list. Even the 7 isn't as popular any more since the Grid system came out.

I ran a large cap HEI in my race car for a few years. Even had a stock GM module in it and spun the engine to 7000 rpm with no ignition problems. I run a discontinued Holley ignition in the race car. Does everything I need it to do but if it ever fails, I have a spare to replace it since it's not available new any more.

Those expen$ive pill chips are nothing but fixed resistors.
I attached charts and graphs so you can make your own pill for any rpm you want.

Re: Thinking about ditching the MSD ignition

If the MSD or similar CD box is used it will be important to install an improved filter for the tachometer if the stock tach is going to be used. The multi-pulse primary signal can affect the indication of a factory tach.

The MSD can also affect the signal to the ECM for pulsing the injectors. Search the interwebs for all the horror stories - You won't find it posted on the MSD site, however.

Re: Thinking about ditching the MSD ignition

Small update I removed the 6A from the harness last night and I am now just running the 8360 and my SS coil per page 6 in the instructions

https://www.jegs.com/InstallationIns...1/121-8360.pdf

I am also running the MSD tach filter I believe it is the one below. It does well without it my tach was going nuts.

I did not have a lot of testing time but something that stuck out was my A/F ratios were all off everything was much leaner across the board according to my A/f Meter. The car ran well and pulled hard to the redline. Hopefully I will get a dry patch this weekend to play more
