1989 camaro shuts off while driving

Hey guys, ive been having this issue for a couple weeks now. The car will startup just fine and run for a good 3-6 minutes before just shutting off and not starting back up. But if you wait a good 3-4 hours itll start right up and repeat. We've went through 2 fuel pumps(screens etc)thinking they were faulty but at this point it cant be the fuel pump. We've already overrided the VATS a month or so ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you checked for spark when it dies ? ( bad icm).

Its not even getting fuel into the carborator. Something is cutting the fuel off entirely.

Not sure if your working on a efi converted to carb or older ccc.
Some thirdgen had a lift pump in the tank. Iirc ecm and ops controlled.
Vats was only used on efi applications.

yeah the tank pusher is controlled by the oil pressure switch but primed by the ecm

find in the owners manual the correct pins on the aldl to bridge and you should be able to get it to run constantly - see if she cuts out then.

One of my friends took a look at it last night, he started it up and waited until it died (he hit the accelerator and it died almost instant) to see where it was losing power. He seems to think its the fuel injectors so I will keep you guys updated.

So is it carb'd or EFI? If EFI and still has the stock injectors, replace them, they are bad.

you can ohm the injectors warm. Sounds like as mentioned the injector driver is turning off the shorted injectors.
For future reference stating what your working on will help with diagnostic. Year make model, engine size, efi or carb.

Haha sorry first time using this site. Its a TBI 305 v8 with the stock injectors. Replacing them tomorrow!

You still might want to check spark, could be a icm or pickup coil failure.

Don't replace them, my post was for a TPI setup. TBI injectors rarely go bad.

I'm back with Tuned, pickup coil or ICM (in distributor). But at the same time, troubleshoot the issue. Once the engine dies and doesn't start, is there spark? Do the injectors spray? Is there fuel pressure?

If it is the icm I'd pull the distributor and do the pu coil too. I've had one fail after the other before.

Update: One of the injectors was shot. So we replaced both of them. We saw the injectors spray when we fired it up and it died after about a minute in idle. Although if you rev the engine it will keep it from shutting off. The idle is high at 20 but after we reved it and let it sit, the idle dropped and was around 10.
