Oil in coolant

86 305. The shortblock has been rebuilt, I can see the numbers stamped on the rod caps. I can't tell if heads have had any work and I believe its a stock cam. No markings on the end of it. Double roller chain.
I pulled the engine to paint underhood, clean up and paint the engine 1 color. I pulled the plug on the blocks bottom edge right above the oil pan and on both sides I got a couple ounces of oil before the coolant flushed out. Where would this come from?
The engine didn't have an intake on it when I bought the car but I installed the '89 TPI intake that came with it. Have had it running a year or so. Not perfect, but seemed healthy. Compression checked showed all cylinders good last year. There's sludge looking oil in the pan. Not milkshake looking tho like I've seen before.
I would loose some coolant in the radiator but the heater core was leaking pretty good inside the car too.
Any ideas?

Re: Oil in coolant

Oil floats on water. Doesn't go to the bottom of the water jackets.

If it was on the bottom, it wasn't oil.

Re: Oil in coolant

yeah good point. Now that I think about it..first it was "oil" then the coolant, then the oil again at the end. Hmm, wonder what that black oil like substance was...

Re: Oil in coolant

I would say it's probably just the goop that ends up in the cooling system over time...if it was green in the catch can and radiator I wouldn't worrie too much, there's no where that pressurized oil and coolent come close, and if there was any leaks you would see coolent in the oil first

Re: Oil in coolant

I'm having a real tough time deciding what to do here.
I know I was losing coolant but the heater core was leaking pretty good.
There's really no signs of oil in the coolant, but the bottom of the oil pan is pretty sludge looking. But not milkshake looking. Weird.

Re: Oil in coolant

Earlier I said I knew the shortblock had been rebuilt due to finding the cylinder number stampings on the rod caps. Well, it hit me in my sleep the other night, these are not stamps. They're etched. And that's when I thought this really was a shadetree job. Wouldn't you think a shop would have stamps?
You can see the lines they marked on the sides of the rod and caps to place them back where they were removed from.
Who knows what clearances may be. Tempted to pull this apart.

So then a little closer look at the top of the piston and this ...

Thats .030 over correct?
So maybe it did go to machine shop

Re: Oil in coolant

Those markings are one of those "dremel" pencils. Nothing unusual.

Yes that is .030" over. No doubt that agrees with your micrometer?

Looks like yerbasic "competitively priced" "rebuilt" motor.

Since it's a 305,who cares. Needs to go in the garbage.

What was the question? Sorry, I already answered it whatever it was.
