Aren't stock TPI intakes great for low end torque?

Re: What's the best for street fun

I had a cammed/exhaust L98/350 with a stock TPI....first with an auto trans with a 2200 stall, then a T5......around town, stoplight to stoplight, it was a ton of fun. I never felt that I needed "more" ....I'm currently running a heavily modded/ported TPI on my 383, and it's an absolute beast. Now, I wouldn't line it up and run a 1/4 mile with pipe dreams of street racing glory, but for street fun!??? -Oh yeah...it's all there.

What size/spec engine? I think that's really what we need to know. It doesn't sound like you're stuck on TPI (some of us ARE ) ......I'd say the cheapest would be a used stock TPI. After that, ya might as well go Holley Stealth Ram. Still pretty affordable, and all the performance you'd really want. If you need more, it's likely you wouldn't have to ask.

Re: What's the best for street fun

They are great boosted but be careful where the boost comes in at. They create strong 2800-3600 rpm power/trq so gotta be careful on the tune up. Timing needs to be lower than with other intakes in that region

Re: What's the best for street fun

We're starting to get into the minutiae of what is "better". Without a cost goal, cubic inch goal, peak HP goal, we can't tell you what is better. Part for part, a high flow Miniram will make more peak HP than a Tuned Port intake. Is that better? You tell me.

I had a goal for my engine that had been coming together for almost 10 years. I knew I wanted to keep a long tube "TPI" style intake. I knew I wanted to get the most power I could without exotic, high dollar parts, and I knew I wanted to put it together myself. I knew it'd be a street car, with very minimal track time. Ported intake parts were essential in my opinion, as were as many cubes as realistically possible. A 383 was a fairly obvious choice. I chose heads and cam big enough to let the 383 breathe, but also to make power down low where the TPI could feed it. That meant relatively small heads, and a relatively conservative cam. Big compared to stock for sure, but smaller than what some guys are putting in a 383. Rear is also geared accordingly. No 4.10s here!!!!!!!

Given that info, I could ask about a part, and ask if it were "better". Without goals, it's hard to say what's better.

All that being said, the HSR is affordable, easy to work on and flow real well. Unless you have specific goals it doesn't meet, it's hard to beat.

Low-end torque is overrated. There is only so much you can use before the tires blow off. If you really want to be faster then you should bolster the mid-range and upper rpm torque and extend the usable RPM range of the engine (lift redline capability). Adding an extra 1000 RPM of usable range to your engine would reap huge benefits and still be perfectly streetable.

Re: What's the best for street fun

Imo the stealth ram is the best all around intake. Its easy to work on, has mid rnage runner length for strong power from 2500-6500 in most street 350-383's and even some larger engines when ported right. Bang for buck they were hard to beat. But again depends what you want to do.

I agree with this sentiment too.

....and not to add an entirely different element to the conversation, but I think the mod that arguably made the most seat of the pants difference for me (before the new 383) was my 700r4 with a shift kit and 2200 stall. WOW! -what a difference that made, without even getting into the engine!

Re: What's the best for street fun

TPIS miniram is styled after the LT1/4 intakes. Much better high end breathability providing good mid and high end usable power to 6000rpm or so.
