vortec roller vs non roller block

I have a 1995 vortec 4 bolt main block that has the drilled and tapped bosses for a spider, but didn't come with an oem roller cam. I understand that the lifter bosses on the roller cam motors were higher. Is there any way to confirm if mine are high enough to use an oem style roller cam with the dog bones and spider?

I don't know the proper height off the top of my head but you could assemble and rotate by hand and make sure nothing binds or sits incorrectly and adjust from there.

Re: vortec roller vs non roller block

Hi Motorhead,

If the bosses were drilled, then you're good to go. The tops of the lifter bores will also be machined flat also to accept the dog bones. Like the picture below.

On the blocks that are not compatible with a roller cam, they won't have the bosses at all. Nor will the lifter bores be machined flat. Like this (it's been painted so it might be harder to tell that the lifter bores haven't been machined).
