Fuel filler neck misalignment with new tank

Looking for advice on how to reposition filler neck on my new tank I am installing. After test fitting the new Spectra Premium tank in place...after fighting to install with the tank straps, the filler neck needs to move about 1/2-3/4" toward the back of the car for the fuel door assembly to go back in. Is it possible to bend the neck since it has the accordion shaped tube at the tank base? If repositioning causes a seam leak at the tank surface... where would I go to have this checked and resoldered?

Reason for the new tank is I am converting to EFI and needed to get a tank & sending unit for use with a in tank pump. I choose a items for a 1989 5.7l Trans Am.

Should bend pretty easily.

Re: Fuel filler neck misalignment with new tank

I just replaced mine with a doorman from Advance, I have read alot about this issue with other brands and was scared I would have issues. The doorman unit all but put itself in. I was very impressed with the fit and finish. Hope you get yours solved.

I also used the Dorman and had no fitment problems with the filler neck.

it might have been bent in shipping. Try bending it. If it won't bend send it back?

Re: Fuel filler neck misalignment with new tank

Speaking of bent in shipment... One time I needed a radiator for the Explorer. Ordered one at the friendly local autoparts store. Got it home, and pulled it out of the box and one edge of the radiator was crushed. Like literally the aluminum was smashed. The box looked fine. So I take it back and they call up another one from the distribution center. Looked at the box, looks good... Figure screw making this trip again, let's pull it out of the box to make sure - SMASHED just like the first one. Got a refund and went across the street to the competitor. Pulled the new radiator out of their box, all's good. Best I can figure, the machine that processed the radiators for the 1st chain's order must have smashed several radiators in a row during packaging or production, and no one noticed.

The point being that sometimes you get parts that are off a little, or a lot. Fortunately these filler necks are supposed to bend. Just don't ram your favorite pry bar in the filler neck and use it to bend the neck around. It'll work, but it'll foul up the little flappy door gizmo. LOL

Re: Fuel filler neck misalignment with new tank

Well I took a 2.5" piece of an exhaust pipe and placed it over the neck as far down as it would go and bent the neck to the rear and up a little and all looks good now. Since this was a trial fit (without the sending unit and the opening covered and sealed to keep debris out) I dropped it back down and all looks good. Guess just my paranoia getting the better of me. The bend actually takes place on the tank itself and not the filler neck. The metal of the tank is pretty thin and since I was only moving it about 3/4" at the inlet... it really doesn't bend the tank hardly at all because the neck is 18" or so long.

Thanks for the advice... and I'm sure there was some shipping damage as the tank arrived in a cardboard box with the neck sticking out. Next up are some possible sending unit mods!

Can't believe it was shipped like that with the neck sticking out. That's just ridiculous!
