cam choice: From hydraulic flat tappet to solid roller
cam choice: From hydraulic flat tappet to solid roller
Posting for my little brother:
I'm having trouble making up my mind on the cam decision for my sbc 350. I have a 350 from a 78 k10 truck the cylinder bores are beautiful so I'm just going to do heads and cam with a small shot of nitrous until it blows up. Eventually I will make it a 383 stroker and port me heads (iron eagle 215) but for now im just looking to pop a cam in there and I am weighing out my options.
I don't want to miss anything and so far I have solid rollers with link bars, cam button, Lock plate, and I know I will need a thrust washer and possibly a different timing cover but I'm not sure if there's anything else aside from the normal things like pushrods and timing chain etc
I have a melanized distributor gear as well.
I am mainly asking if I am missing anything for the hydraulic flat tappet to solid roller conversion and opinions if it's worth it to spend the extra money to go solid roller or just wait til it blows the bottom end?
Thanks

I can't tell why you are even thinking of solid lifters for what sounds like a near stock type engine. Do you want solids so you can rev the **** out of the motor? Is that why you 'predict' it will blow up? Revving the motor outside of it's power band is futile, except if you want to blow it up. Your engine - unless you plan on changing pistons etc. - will not make enough compression to make use of a big cam and ported heads, then you need adequate intake charge and an exhaust system that will allow the engine to pump all the air you pass at high rpm. If you don't want to rev the pee out of the motor, there are so many useful hydraulic options, the tech for hydraulic rollers is so developed now, you could make lots of power with your 350 at a very useable rpm without all of the hassle and expense of solids….

thank you I fwd it to him, I think he was just buying it bc he wanted to use it on his build after this breaks but I have been trying to convince to get a hydraulic. I'm no cam expert hence why I wanted to put it up, but my thinking was something along the lines of 240's duration, 500-ish lift and 110 LSA just an off the shelf cam.
