RPMs high; No sounds or change in engine

I have a 92 camaro with a 305.

It was sitting for awhile, and after I started it up, its RPMs are high, but the engine isn't making any noise or sound that isn't normal.

What could be the problem? Is it the engine?

Of course it's not the engine , it's the classic tach failure that most of these cars eventually experience . If your engine was truly revving at close to 4K RPM in park you'd damn well know it .

Do a search of "tach reads high" here and you'll find lots of threads about it , and even threads discussing how to replace the failed component in the tach that's causing the falsly high reading .
