Thanks for all the help on the sight here! The short block is well underway. The crank, cam and first two pistons are in. I measured and all clearances are within new specs.

Looking good! Been so busy ive only taken my heads off and sent to have refreshed haven't touched my shortblock yet hoping to get it in over the winter I suppose.

Thanks all. Yeah Mike, love the smells of the iron, greases, solvents. Sounds funny to some not sharing our interests, but I love it. Each of my boys will install a piston. I even brought my wife out to show her the first two rotating around with the crank. She was a pillar of strength with not even so much as a hint of an eye roll and a simple "cool!" while I cranked away giggling maniacally the whole time.

That doesn't look like it was squared..... doesn't even look machined.

Belt sander?!?

Yeah that's a pretty weird (sh1tty) deck finish if you ask me. Definitely don't use an MLS gasket on that mess. Should look like this:
