Re: Compatibility question

Those don't look like they'll go over .500", if even that.

Measure the installed height, as they sit, with a micrometer. Won't be super accurate but should be "close enough". Then take off a spring and put it in a vise with some sort of padding on the jaws (2" aluminum angle works great), compress them, and see what height they coil-bind at.

Coil bind needs to NOT occur before the springs reach cam lift plus .060" or so; and even that is cutting it close.

You MIGHT be able to use offset keepers or something to gain some installed height, but there MUST be AT LEAST 120 lbs or so on the seat for that cam. You can't just leave the springs floppy loose to get more height. That's a recipe for a different disaster. You can use a small shipping scale of the like, and a drill press, to measure seat pressure. Again, not "accurate", but "close enough" to know whether it's A Good Idea or not. Frankly I doubt you have more than 90 lbs or so, even as they sit now; meaning they're TOTALLY INADEQUATE for even a relatively mild aftermarket cam like that old-design one that you shouldn't even be using because you're leaving ALOT of power on the table.

Re: Compatibility question

Interesting..... do you know of a reliable source where I can find out what these “orange” springs advertised specs actually are? Appreciate the response.

Re: Compatibility question

I don't know of a reliable source for much of anything from GM. Whatever "specs" they "advertise" aren't going to translate well into the rest of the world's way of doing things anyway.

OTOH, since you're going to measure them anyway, what difference does abuncha "advertised specs" make, anyway? All you'll find out is, whether they were telling the truth, or lying. Which makes not the first whit of difference to the outcome of your build, since you'll ACTUALLY KNOW what their ACTUAL MEASURED properties are.

That said, they look like yerbasic stockers to me. You'll know once you measure.

Re: Compatibility question

It’s just out of curiosity really. These heads are new old stock straight out of the box, came assembled.

Re: Compatibility question

Perhaps it would be better to just forget using those GM springs, contact Comp Cams and ask them what springs (and other hardware) they recommend to use with the camshaft of your choice?

However, you're still going to have to perform measurements, checking clearances, etc.

Re: Compatibility question

Just get the LS beehives and move on. Doesn't matter if those were THE MOST whiz bang amazing springs EVER in their day (unlikely) - they aren't going to do what a set of $75 stock LS beehives can do.

Trust me you simply WILL NOT BELEIVE what a set of high performance beehives are capable of till you try it. My Vortec revs like an LS and people that have tuned plenty of small blocks are honestly shocked at how it wraps up to 6500 with seemingly no effort.
