Loss of compression

can gauge cluster cause engine performance to decrease? Currently while idling gauge reads 7krpm after driving the car for about 30 min to 1hr and especially if reving the engine or highway driving i start to loose power. When i give gas it starts getting sluggish. Mechanic i went to wants to change the gauge cluster saying that its giving the comp the wrong information and causing the engine to loose power. Any ideas on what the fix is for this or have had similar problems?

Re: Loss of compression

The dash cluster neither give info to nor receives info from the ECM. 2 totally separate subsystems.

Your tach is wacked, like they all are. Won't affect anything about how the car runs though.

Low on power at high RPMs and high load sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I'd suggest, as a pre-emptive first strike, just change out the filter. If you haven't, it needs one, whether that's The Problem or not. Then if it still does it, find out what your fuel pressure is WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP. NOT, sitting in your driveway idling; WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP. IOW, while driving down the highway and trying to go up a hill for example. Duct-tape your FP gauge to the windshield and have your assistant keep a sharp eye on it WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP.

Thank you that is what I thought, this confirms what I was already thinking.
interesting because it got a lot better when I changed the fuel filter it was choking prior and severe loss of power before i changed the filter now it just gets sluggish. If the pressure is low while acting up do you think it is the fuel pump or should I be looking at injectors?

Re: Loss of compression

The FP gauge reading WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP will tell.

Instinct warns me however, that it's AHELLUVALOTMORE LIKELY that ONE fuel pump is bad, than EIGHT injectors. But don't worry about that yet until you see what the fuel pressure is doing WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP.

Re: Loss of compression

Oh, in case I forgot to mention:

the FP gauge reading while sitting still idling is meaningless to the issue at hand. You need to observe it WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP. During a time when it's hot or you've been driving for an hour or whatever, and you're trying to accelerate and it's sluggish, bogging, stumbling, lazy, whatever. WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP. Can I make the concept of WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP any clearer? Anything I can do to explain any particular letter of the words, let me know.

Yes , I got you . Its pretty easy to get it to act up . Consistently on a small trip on the highway does the trick. Thank you again at least now im following the right direction now . Instead of chasing 👻 that have nothing to do with the problem.

Yeah I wouldn't be going back to that mechanic again haha Sofa is spot on though slap a FP gauge on there go drive it n see what it's doing. I just went through rebuilding my fuel system n troubleshooting it as well. That gauge will become your best friend. Sounds like a weak pump or possibly something weird with your return line. Let us know what you find.
