Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
Are there any markings or ID in the valve cover area? Sometimes manufacturers put their mark on products that are made for another company. Or you could try Jegs if they have any part numbers on them. I’m not sure on value and such. Buying any used head I would assume it needs work unless it’s fresh from a machine shop or someone you know and trust. Not always the case but something to consider going in. If the heads are 500-600 and end up needing 200-300 worth of work then you’re better off looking at new.
Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
Maybe I will get more info on them this evening. The fellow wanting to sell them is supposed to send some pictures later today. The only thing he knew for sure is they have Harland Sharp roller rockers. He supposed to call the machine shop today to get the specs on the valve train.
Thanks
Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
One more thing to consider is the port volume versus what you intend on using them for. If it’s 200cc runner and you’re trying to put them on an otherwise stock top end TPI, odds are they won’t fit with a stock base and performance will be lost. Ask me how I know lol. Guess the questioned should be asked what are you planning to use them on?
Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
He finally sent some more pictures and I found out they are the 197 high flow with a 72cc chamber with 2.05/ 1.6 valves. I’m in the process of building a 383 stroker and was thinking of going with the flattops. I can’t afford AFRs unless I can find a good set used. Been looking at the Brodix IK 200’s, just weighing my options. I really appreciate the help.
Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
If the price is right and there are no problems with them I wouldn’t be afraid to run them. Just be aware of the larger port if you’re running a TPI. Not sure if others have run into it, but years ago I had a 355 built with 200 Dart heads. When we put the stock TPI base on the about a 1/4” of port was showing. Ordered and Edelbrock base which was better, but only had maybe 1/8” covering the port with not much seal. Had to weld up a brand new base to get sufficient area. Mismatched cam and top end would never make that mistake again.
If you’re interested in AFR’s, here a link a fellow member posted in another thread. All things aside, I don’t think you could find a better deal on heads, perhaps even used.
Re: Older set of Jegs heads for sbc identification
Thanks for the link and info. I will be running a edelbrock performer air gap and a holley so no worries on the tpi base. I assume I can have flat tappet springs installed at no extra cost if I were to order them.
