HELP! Car Runs best when Engine Light is on!?
Hey guys, I have a 86 Camaro with 2.8 fi and auto trans and my service engine light has been goin on so i took it to get the code read. the mechanic said it was the O2 sensor so i took another O2 senosor out of my parts car and put it in there but the engine light would still come on randomly. Something ive noticed is that the car runs much better when the light is on. on cold mornings it will start up and idle strong when the light is on and when the light is off it will take 4 tries to get the car started. Also when the light is not on the car will run rough when im at a stoplight and sometimes stall out when the light turns green and i push the gas down slightly. This has been a problem for a while and is really annoying! If you have any ideas please respond! thanks!
P.S.- I also have a homemade intake and the O2 sensor is in a hole in the side of the intake, if that matters. but the problem started before i did the intake. Thanks again!

Gee, I wonder what's wrong here :p You got a home made intake and put the o2 sensor in it.. Yeah, that's a problem. The whole point of the oxygen sensor is to measure the a/f ratio of the exhaust, not the intake.. in fact the intake should have zero fuel in it, so it's really screwing your computer up. Im gonna take a wild guess and say you're throwing a code 44--lean o2 sensor. What does your exhaust look like? The sensor should have a bung in the drivers side exhaust manifold... so.. you're going to want to get this straightened out.

O2 sensor in exhaust? ok maybe im mixing it up then. Im thinking the O2 sensor is the sensor that screws into the Y shaped stock intake that leads to the Mass airflow sensor and throttle body. you screw it in and then theres a wire that connects to it. Does anybody know what im talking about? sorry if im unclear.
