Engine Swap Gauges

Will the stock gauges in an 83 Z28 work with the sending units from a 93 LT1? Mainly talking about oil pressure/engine temp. I have currently have the stock instrument cluster for the 83 and either of those two gauges work.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

You can put the 83 coolant temp and oil pressure sending units into the new motor and then they will work just fine, assuming whatever wiring you have accommodates them. Question would be though, whether you need the type of OPSU that has the fuel pump contacts on it. That would also depend on your wiring harness details.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

Will the locations be the same for each and is it basically plug and play if the wiring is there?

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

AFAIK yes.

The wiring is the big question. Nobody out here can answer that. Depends on how much of the car's original wiring was hacked out, whether those parts of the LT1 wiring are included, if so whether they're spliced into the car's remaining wiring, etc. No way anybody out here is going to know that for you.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

So if the wiring is not there, wiring up after market gauges and putting them somewhere on the dash/console would be the next best thing. Or the cheapest I would imagine.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

Not necessarily. Might be just as eeeeezy to get the part of the original wiring for that off of a parts car and hook the stock ones back up. It just depends on ... stuff that only you have access to knowing about.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

The third gen selection in the pick and pull yards here in OKC are pretty sparse. But that would be a very inexpensive fix.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

Salvage yards in general aren't a good source for that sort of thing. These cars are too old.

If you find that that's the best solution, watch the classifieds on here for somebody parting out a similar car.

I'd suggest you look at C100, particularly the side of it that's farther from the fender; and see what wires are still there and where they go. That half of C100 has the battery feeds, starter, ignition, and gauge wiring in it. Most likely the interior side wiring isn't altered, at least not very much, and not in that area. Use your FSM to identify whatever wires you do/don't find.

Re: Engine Swap Gauges

I did get them all working, but the process involved quite a bit of trial and error.

I don’t know how accurate they are, but the needles all move.
