Stalling issue (fuel related)
So long story short, my 92 Firebird stalls when the gas tank is getting low and I'm coasting to a stop (auto trans). I'm pretty sure this is fuel pump. My gas gauge already doesn't work (reads full all the time) and I've already replaced the fuel filter and tried using seafoam for tank.
What do you think?
This car has also been sitting for the last 5 years without running. Should I be concerned varnish and grime in the bottom of the tank?
Don't crucify me but I was going to do the fuel access door mod and make a high quality access panel. However I don't know whether I should bite the bullet and drop the rear axel, exhaust, and driveshaft so I can pull the tank and get the sludge all the way out. I heard diesel or something cleans out tanks really nice. Is there a way I can get out a good majority of any grime if I were to just use a fuel access door?

So, , , either way you'll be dropping the tank, to do a "high quality" access panel WILL require access to BOTH sides of the sheet metal, which is not possible with the tank in place. Thread Starter

um. no. There's plenty of ways to make the panel without access to the back side and still get a perfect seal. I'm not worried about that anyways. That'll come later if it does. Right now I want to know if I should be worried about gas tank grime.

On ours the pickup was broke so wouldn't pickup about 1/2 tank. Glad we weren't lazy and cut hole. Tank was rusting and needed replacing.

Re: Stalling issue (fuel related)
Ended up replacing the fuel pump and sending unit completely. Even got pics inside my gas tank from the top. Just a little sediment in the bottom. Nothing too terrible to drop the tank. Someone already cut a terrible access panel so I just touched it up. Seals good. stalling issue however I think I might have just been me running low on gas and the gforce of the car stopping pushed the fuel away from the pickup at the rear of the car. Just an idea will test the problem soon
