1987 Camaro AC Compressor Serpentine Swap
I scored big at the junkyard today. I got the crank pulley, water pump pulley, AC bracket and alternator bracket off a 1991 Caprice, which is the same as TPI Camaro/Firebird. The brackets came with AC compressor and power steering pump, whether or not they are any good....
To get the AC on the passenger side, is it as simple as buying a 1988-1992 AC refrigerant hose and connecting it to the evaporator and condenser? Other than the wiring of course..
The accumulator is the same between years.
The evaporator core says it is different, but if I leave the hard line to the condenser I think it would be fine.
Really just changing the flexible lines.
Can the V-belt clutch be swapped out for the serpentine belt clutch on my good working 1987 compressor?
I did the swap once before on a 1985 but used the entire AC system from a 1991.

Re: 1987 Camaro AC Compressor Serpentine Swap
I’ve looked at a v belt and serp compressor setup side by side, and the main shaft that the clutch mounts to has different lengths between the two. I doubt you’ll be able to get the serpentine clutch assembly on there, since the whole thing is thicker than the v belt setup. If you have an old v belt compressor clutch setup that has the big inertia ring, I’m guessing the shaft would be longer on that, but can’t say for sure. FWIW my old v belt clutch/pulley setup is the slim one without the inertia ring. Im pretty sure I removed the clutches with the same tool, so if the length on the shaft nose is acceptable, you might be able to get this to work.
