Hey guys I've got a new fuel tank and straps on the way and was wondering how to replace the tank straps?? Can those pins just slide out? Never had to do it before any and all opinions are welcome. Thanks
Sorry I should have been more specific. The pins are contained into the strap and do not come out. Rather, they act as trunions inside a sheet metal tab that is spot welded under the car. They lift up and out of that bracket. You may have to remove the tank to swing the strap enough to slide it out of the brackets.
It's easiest to remove the old tank first, then swap out the straps, and then put the new tank in. You'll need to swing the whole strap to one side of the car or the other to slip the pin out of the pocket. It'll be obvious when you get into the job.
These are the "mounting" ends of the straps. You basically rotate the strap about 90 degrees, slot that into the opening, then rotate the strap to the proper orientation.
The red circles show where the straps mount. I couldn't find an up close picture, unfortunately.
The new straps should already have the pins in there, and I don't believe they're designed to come out. Also, if your new straps are like the ones I bought recently they don't come pre-bent. Mine were straight and I had to bend them 90% of the way there by hand, then tighten the bolts down to get them to conform to the fuel tank profile. Definitely easier with two people (or something to temporarily hold the tank in place while you're messing with the straps).
Awesome thanks guys. My tank is already pulled out. I ordered a new tank because the filler neck pulled right out when I pulled the tank. Lol. And the straps were the ones that car was built with back in March 90. The rest of the fuel system is brand new so might as well make it all new
