which is better?
What is better for a 350? a k&n cold air, or just a k & n filter with a open lid like the whisper lid or whatever?

The open lid, are you referring to the X-Treme lid. For that to be beneficial you need some time of cowl induct hood or ram air for the air to enter the top.
