84 Recaro vacuum hose help

Hey guys been helping my buddy with his 84 Recaro 5.0 carb and whoever worked on the car before left a ton of vacuum lines open and just broken. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. I’m working from Chiltons manual diagrams and they only help so much. Thanks!

The Vacuum port that comes off of the thermostat is snapped and missing both lines, looking to see where they go to.

Pic 2: This port on the back of the carb is just left open

Pic 3: This port is on the lower left front end of the carb, looks like it goes to the EVAP valve if i’m not mistaken

Pic 4: The line coming off the map sensor going to nothing

Pic 5: Line coming off of EGR solenoid left with bolt in it

Pic 6: Valve/ line coming off smog pump going nowhere

Pic 7: This line was just laying under the carb, I believe this goes to the thermostat? The other end of it is a mess too if anyone could tell me both lines routing, this isn’t reusable as it’s very worn.

Pic 8: This is more of a bonus question I didn’t want to make an individual thread for. I’m pretty sure this is just a service connector but given the state of the emissions i’m not leaving any stones unturned lol

If components are missing I will deleted his emissions but he says he reaks like gas after he drives the car so i’m just trying to button it up as is for now. The carb is probably dumping fuel to compensate for the AFR. If anyone has pics of their carb that would be appreciated too, thanks again fellas!

Re: 84 Recaro vacuum hose help

Search this forum for "vacuum diagrams" and locate yours.

1. That's the thermal vacuum switch for the EFE valve; which is located at the exit of the right exhaust manifold, between the manifold and the Y-pipe. It routes vacuum to said valve when the coolant temp is below something like 120°F. When the valve is closed, exhaust gas from the right bank is forced to go up over the top of the engine, through the intake manifold under the carb, and out the other head to the exhaust proper. It warms up the carb base for emissions reasons.

2. See your car's vac diag.

3. Vacuum supply to the EGR solenoid

4. That's not the MAP sensor. It's the baro (barometric pressure) sensor. It measures the absolute pressure of the atmosphere. THIMK: "vacuum" isn't a specific pressure of some sort; it's THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN the pressure INSIDE the intake manifold, and the pressure OUTSIDE the manifold. Older systems sort of "assumed" some constant atmospheric pressure and took the MAP indication at face value, which as we all know, isn't true, even if it's a useful approximation most of the time. The baro sensor fine-tunes the ECM's vision of "vacuum" by giving it measurements of BOTH pressures. It's particularly aimed at high-altitude conditions. It's supposed to be exposed to the outside world so it can measure the ambient pressure. The MAP sensor is over by the brake booster.

5. Vacuum from #3; vac supply to the EGR solenoid

6. See the vac diag for your car

7. Plugs onto #1

8. Test point for hooking up a dwell meter to check the signal to the MCS (mixture control solenoid) in the carb, which is the blue object in your pic #7

Looks like that thing needs a trip to the quarter (dollar bill? credit card?) car wash. It's NAAAAAASSSSTY.

Here's kinda what it might look like if better taken care of and cleaned up somewhat. Not quite exactly the same as yours, but VERY close.

Thanks Sofa you’re always responding to my threads, any idea where I can grab that plastic piece coming off the thermostat? I tried searching the forum for vacuum diagrams and other peoples random threads come up and the diagrams I already have

How about https://www.autozone.com/engine-mana...-e923/3056_0_0 Should be the one listed for your car, if you walked up the counter and asked for it they'd be able to look it right up

Re: 84 Recaro vacuum hose help

Thanks again Sofa, is there an electrical connector that is supposed to go to this piece too below the vacuum ports?
