Steering shaft

Does anybody know the proper torque values for the intermediate steering shaft upper/lower bolts? Most are saying “as tight as you can get it” but I find that an odd answer. Could be wrong… Thanks!

Re: Steering shaft

If memory serves, the upper is 10mm std thread. Proper torque on that size bolt (which is how it's determined) is around 35 - 40 ft-lbs. The lower one, if you're talking about the one that clamps the rubber disc to the steering gear, is smaller; should probably be 25 - 30 or so.

Thank you. On this topic has anybody upgraded their steering box? The guy doing my rebuild offered it but it turned fine the way it was and I didn’t see the extra $200 worth it…at least not for regular street driving on mostly flat straight roads. Thoughts?

If yours appears fine and performs to your liking then there is no need to change it. It is however common to swap boxes to either firm up the feel, change ratios, or just repair a busted worn out unit.

Zackly. If it works, it's good.

Re: Steering shaft

this is what came out of the top of the intermediate shaft. It was covered in road gunk since ‘84 so was interesting trying to get out until I realized what it was. Why the round head “bolt” design? Any known NEW alternative bolts I could use?
