Serpentine Belt Tensioner Pulley Bolt Torque

Just changed out my tensioner pulley, and cannot find a torque value in the FSM for this item. Does anyone happen to know what that value is?

I've attached the reference I use, got it from some random place on the internet. It says 37 lb ft, I think as long as it's above 30 it'll be ok.

Re: Serpentine Belt Tensioner Pulley Bolt Torque

If it's yerbasic 10mm std thread (1.5mm? not sure, CRS) of the metric equivalent of SAE Grade 5 (ordinary automotive grade) which I think is called 8.8, the standard torque for that fastener size is about 50 N-m, which is about 36.something ft-lbs. So yeah... Just tighten the damn thing and move on.

I like to tighten a bolt up until I exceed its elastic limit then back it off a 1/8 turn out of shame. Feels slightly lees shameful if I put some blue Loctite on first.

I can't! After a lifetime of technical writing, I have a hard time doing that. It's a curse.

I've read so many threads today I don't remember. Was you the one having trouble with the factory washer thing and the new idler pulley?

Re: Serpentine Belt Tensioner Pulley Bolt Torque

Just checked. It was you. I had the exact same problem trying to replace the idler pulley with the "correct" aftermarket one on a 86 Buick Grand National. Had to use a little flat washer the exact correct diameter to space it out some. The OEM pulley will get a replacement bearing and go back on.

Re: Serpentine Belt Tensioner Pulley Bolt Torque

Yeah, I'm keeping the original pulley. Next time I'll get a bearing for it.The bolt has a bit of a built in washer as part of the head, and seems a perfect match to the Gates (made in Canada) pulley and bearing, without the big factory cupped washer. Checked that the threaded hole went all the way through first, so I knew I was goign to crack the aluminum tensioner housing in the process.

All torqued an moving on to the next task.
