R12 Compressor

My original R12 compressor is getting louder. Otherwise still works great. Although the front seal is leaking, it only requires 1 can every spring, and it blows cold the entire summer. Anyway to reseal the front of the compressor?

Re: R12 Compressor

Sure.

Pop the clutch off, replace the seal. Piece o cake.

Lose all the defidgeterant in the process of course. Details. Those pesky details, they get in the way of everything.

Me, if I was going to put myself through that, I'd tear the compressor all the way down and "rebuild" it, butt that's just me. Except that it's 2025 now and that old POS is so obsolete it makes no sense to spend time money or effort on it. No way I'd do that anymore. Butt to each his own.

Re: R12 Compressor

...And the problem(s) with the quality of reman compressors it longer than the line at the DMV, so if you plan on keeping the vehicle more than a few months you might just want to rebuild it yourself. It may not save you any time or money, but it might it might make it another 30 years. Almost no remans that I've ever experienced could possibly claim that, and some barely made it out of the box before failure.

Re: R12 Compressor

The times and World has changed and not for the better.

These days you never buy remanufactured starters, alternators, AC compressors, or carburetors.

This doesn't apply to well known local mom and pops shops.

You either buy new or rebuild it yourself.

Re: R12 Compressor

You can reclaim what’s still inside and re use. I bought a charge station and a reclaim station.
there’s a guy in Miami I’ll send my compressor to when it goes, does ex work. But then you gotta flush system good
a can a year is a lot, I’m a can and a half in 7 years. Bought a 25 lb tank of R12 If you go to the polar ice cap, the hole in the ozone to the left is mine. 😂
