When pulling the engine....

84 Camaro Z28, 305HO mated to a T5. Time to pull it and refresh it. Gonna stick with the 305 and T5, but gonna freshen both of them up. My question is should I separate the tranny from the engine or pull it as one unit? Most of what I have seen is to separate them, but just wanted to confirm with you guys. I looked around and did not see a thread on this, but it is late and I may have overlooked it.

Thanks!

I would recommend to separate them, much easier.

Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: When pulling the engine....

Either way works. I've done it both ways. Which one is better depends on your tools & facilities. For most people it'll be easier to pull the engine out the top and the transmission from the bottom; and to put the transmission back in, including the bell housing, before the engine.

Re: When pulling the engine....

Thank you both, I very much appreciate it! I'm going to ask my local mechanics as well as online reviews, but just in happenstance, does anyone have a trusted machine shop in central NC (I live closest to Chapel Hill)? Knowledge is power!

Re: When pulling the engine....

'Only way I've ever done it is all together, in and out. It probably is easier pulling them seperately...

Re: When pulling the engine....

if you pull out top, I'd venture a guess its easier to take hood off. But how hard is it to get hood back on and aligned?

Yes, the hood needs to come off.

Piece o cake. I have the lightweight "composite" L69 Camaro hood, and I can even do it by myself. Easier w another person but not a problem either way.
