Figured someone could direct me to this info here. I bought a GM Hot Cam years ago from a GM dealer. Cam in a giant round tube so I out is a normal cam box. Pulled it and and was looking at the rear and it is stamped 417676 or 417878. stamping not clear if a 6 or 8. Can't find either anywhere to confirm what cam it actually is.
If it is a Hotcam it should have 586 stamped in it and most if not all had a yellow paint stripe just ahead of the distributor gear. GM factory roller cams I have had my hands on always have the last 3-4 digits of the part number stamped into them. No other GM small block cam had 0.328" lobe lift on both sides. You can use a micrometer to find out the lobe lift. The Hotcam also has an extra long dowel pin to drive the opti-spark compared to a regular OE roller small block cam. The Hotcam kits with 1.6 rockers and springs included had cams that were mostly shipped in cardboard boxes. If you bought the cam itself it was often in the GM cam tube. With a 30 second google image search I was able to find an image proving the Hotcam came in the tube at one point just as I remembered.
Also found an image of one in a cardboard box when the whole kit was purchased. Also just as I remember.
This is the Hotcam that CuttersPerformance posted the ID stamp of for reference of what they typically look like. My GM 6492' cam, 1264 Vortec cam, 071 ZZ4, and the 454HO/502 Base cam I have had were all stamped in the same place..
