I read somewhere that you can modify the 85 sending unit to work as a 2 wire non fuel pump sending unit. Has anyone had sucess ?

Personally I would add the booster pump and wire it through an oil pressure switch. It was factory on the L69 cars and the later LG4s as you have found out.
