tips on changing universals???

well, we have this small problem to start off with. The car will rev to about 6000rpms, shift, and then there is a loud thump from under the car. it is from underneath the car. The guy at the auto part store told us that it could be the universal joints. so we are thinking of replacing them. They are relatively cheap, so if its not them, not a big deal.
Could it be the tranny?
any other guesses on what it could be?

check trans mount first

u joints make noise when you change from forward to reverse normally.

You need a big hammer and a vice to change them. The vice is a luxary but very handy.

the guy at the parts store might have his head up his *** too. thirdgen f bodys break trans mounts very often. check the trans mount or better yet don't bother checking just replace it with a ES poly mount and you'll never break another one.

i was thinkiing that too, about the tranny mount----not the parts guy having his head up his *** so i will check the mounts later in the week. also, this might sound silly, but what do i look for and whats the easiest way to check them?

While your under there checking the rubber trans mount, have a look at the rubber bushing for the torque arm as well... They don't break very often but when worn out enough can make a clunking sound/feeling at every shift.
