Can anyone tell me exactly what i need to do to remove the smog pump and all other parts. What exactly would I be removing? The canister, pump etc. I know I need to plug the manifold aftarwards. Anyone who has done this, please respond. I just see a maze of stuff and want to know what stays and what goes. i don't have emmisions here in FL, so it's pointless and would clear up the engine bay and save some weight. Please help me out with this guys.

 

Anybody? I putting in a homemade CAI today and would like to know if I can just tear the canister out of there instaid of relocating it.

 

Hmmm.... I did this a couple of years ago. simply started disconnecting everything that was connected to the AIR pump itself. The air tubes that connect to the manifolds (and down to the catalytic converter)simply pull off the pump. I don't recall any vacuum lines. The pump had it's own belt so that was no problem.

I don't know what canister you are referring to, but I don't remember taking anything but the pump assembly off. But man, it was a long time ago and me memory isn't what it used to be

It isn't a big deal to do this.

Sorry I can't remember more details, but once you get in there it will become obvious.

I believe he's referring to the charcoal canister (evaporative canister I think it's called?). Which is not part of the smog pump system, but the way it's mounted it probably looks like it could be. It's used to catch and use fuel vapors from the gas tank (and carb in carbed cars). Anyway there's a good article about removing the smog pump in the tech articles section of this site. The canister just catches the fuel vapor then the engine sucks them back in to be burned. Wont really hurt anything to pull it, just make sure you plug all the vacuum ports it was hooked to as well as the line to the fuel tank. You will not be smog legal however (but if your removing the air pump your probably not worried about this anyway). Dunno if it will through a code with a fuel injected car, don't think so though.

Thanks for the help. I just relocated the charcoal canister. I thought it was part of the smog system at first. Still would love to remove it, just to get it out of the engine bay and shed a little extra weight. I live in FL, so emissions are not a problem and the belt was already off the smog pump. Once again, thanks for the help, the bay now looks cleaner and there is definately a noticable power gain from the CAI.
