timing question...
Blade,
That's really a vague question. What '71 350? If you mean a SBC 350, there were only about four different flavors, depending on the application. Power outputs varied from about 170 HP to 285 HP, by factory numbers. Buick, Olds, and Pontiac also made 350s in varying outputs, in case you meant one of those.
A lot of the answer will depend on other factors. What is the current timing setting? What is the distributor total advance? How much would you advance? What kind of fuel are you using? Is this a stock engine or modified? What are the modifications? Are you looking for total horsepower or more power at the low end? Does the engine run at 160°F or 220°F?
Throw out some more information, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions and guesses.

I agree with vader more input required. but if it helps i would try to set the total timing to about 34 degrees and put a curve kit in it also if you have not done so yet take out the points and put in hei the curve kit will give you better response and higher base timing. How much hp you will gain is not that important the over all performance of the motor is you may gain 2 or you may gain 50 depends if the timing is close to where it needs to be or if its at full advance -10 degrees LMAO like it would run anyways good luck
