where is the AIT on my engine??? doing a poject, HELP!

well I know it stand for Intake Air Tempature, but did I find it??

I just installed a K&N open element Kit, I am checking out the ultimate TBI article in the tech section, it says to plug up the therm ac tube and move the IAT to a cool spot to fool the engine to think cold air is going in, now my 1984 305ci engine had the stock snorkle intake with a 4bbl Q-Jet carb, inside the stock air cleaner next to the filter was this little blue thing that said "A/C", this little thing was connected to the carb itself with a tube, and another tube went to the therm AC, well i figured that this is the IAT so i moved it to the very front of the car behind the headlight with the tube still connected ot the carb, the tube that was connected to the therm ac i plugged up with a stick.

did I do this correctly, man I hope so, I need to know.

oh and what do you guys think I gained from the upgrade, I went from a stock air cleaner to a 14x3 inch K&N kit, with the IAT moved to a cooler place "hopefully"

87,

If you have a carbureted engine, you might as well put everything back. The MAT/IAT sensor is only used on a fuel injection system to help control fuel mixture. The temperature sensor you are describing only operates the EFE heat riser opening on the air cleaner for a carbed engine. It isn't going to affect mixture much at all.

im confused...are you saying you did this on a carb car and now you are doing it to a TBI? or are you saying you were reading the ultimate TBI and you have a carb? if you DO have TBI, then the IAT is a little sensor that stuck through a small (1/4") hole in your air cleaner base. it has a deal on the end with 4 nipple-looking things. hope this helped a little! with a 14x3 open K&N, i would sya you should feel one heck of a SOTP difference. i know it sounds wierd, but i went from a 11.3@62 average to a 10.6@65 in the 1/8 mile JUST with a K&N, and this wasnt even a 14x3 open element. this was still using the OEM single snorkel!

I figured that thing wasn't it, but its the only thing connected to the carb with a vacum line.

On 3rd gens, the TBI unit will look like a carb except it will have two egg shaped pods over the inlet holes with wires attached. These are the fuel injectors for this type of fuel delivery system. The IAT sensor is part of this and most other types of high pressure fuel injection systems. Since you have a CC carb, you do not have this sensor. The item you moved was for the Thermovac system(EFE) like stated above used to operate the door on the old housing to draw warmer air from the exhaust manifold to aid in cold start situations. You no longer need this since you removed the old housing and you can plug where this was connected to at the carb. Good luck.

87,

You don't have TBI, and you don't have an IAT/MAT sensor that reports to the ECM. You have an E4ME Rochester carburetor that looks like this:

Put the TVS for the EFE control back in the air cleaner, and call it good.

You might want to also do a little research at the Tech Article section at the front of the site, since there are a few good tips about making your carburetor a little more horsepower friendly.
