Need help with distributor rebulid!!

Well I pulled out the distributor out of the bird when my pickup coil wires broke off. I couldn't get the reluctor off and decided to beat the shaft out. Welllll that didn't go so good.
I broke the reluctor and the pick up coil into peices. The pickup coil was kind of goo. It's weird. I guess 200k miles is a good run though.

Can you guys give me a run down on how I should rebuild the the distributor for a 88'F-bod (remote ign-coil).

or point me at a on-line manual for it??!!

Thanks,
Val

PS. not sure if this is right but I tried beating the shaft out through the top. Should it have came out the bottom?? Now it is stuck and I'm not sure how to get it the rest of the way out.

Lol! I was just going to ask that, then thought you might be offended...so I cleared my post and see you edited yours.

You should have knocked the rollpin out holding the drive gear on, and slid it out the top.

I may opt for a new distributor, depending on the damage to the shaft.

I just read the rest of your edited portion...shaft being stuck..means you probably mushroomed the top and you're now in the process of destroying the shaft bushing.

I'd take a trip to a wrecking yard. Main thing is to make sure the "new" distributor has no wobble in it, has no slop (side to side in the bushing" the rest of the parts (PU coil, module, etc) can be bought new for electrical intergrity.

Well the shaft is really rusted. I think that is why it is stuck. I don't belive I have mushroomed the end YET!! I have used a punch to drive it about another 3-4", and I'm about to go hog wild with a rope and pull it the rest of the way!!!

BTW i got the gear off pretty easily. no problems there

as far as the bushings go. Are they replacable?? I want to get the distributor in the best possible shape.

here is a pic of the situation.

The bushing is replaceable, but I've never done it. Auto-Electric shops can do them for you.

Where's you find that thing?

Throw in the towel. Go get a new, used or rebuilt.

I got the shaft out and the bottom bushing looks good but the top bushing is FUBAR. I'll be going to the dealer tommorw to see if I can get the bushing.

I hate part swaping!!
I never replace my starter, alt, etc. ALWAYS rebuild the one you have!!!! It saves you money and it increases your mechanical skill!! besides after a while you'll get better and have a better product.
