Oil pan on a 400 in a thirdgen
Oil pan on a 400 in a thirdgen
Would it be okay to use any driver's side dipstick, two piece seal, 350 oil pan on a 400 block ? Or do I need some sort of special pan to clear the thirdgen's crossmember ? Thanx
the 350 and smaller blocks use a shorter width wise oil pan, the 400 uses a wider pan to clear the longer stroke of the 400. you might be able to get a 350 pan to work but you would have to bash the sides out a bit for the clearance or just get a 400 pan

The bolt pattern for the pan is the same on the 400/350. But like TempesT68 was saying there is sometimes more clearance needed for the longer stroke of the 400 crank. When using a standard 350 pan it can cause problems with the crank making slight contact. You would have to see the two pans side by side to tell the difference.
I used a 350 pan on a 400 buildup when i tore it down to freshen the motor you could see were the crank was hittiing the 350 pan. I couldnt hear it because of the loud exhaust. Couple taps with a hammer fixed that.
