Oil bypass 350SBC

I am putting a new motor in my car ,and in the process of getting it together or I guess I should say putting it together I have had a guy tell me that I should plug the oil bypass that is in the oil filter adapter to always force the oil to go through the filter. This doesn't really sound like the best thing to do, but don't know. Has anyone out there ever heard of this and if so is it good or bad? You hear so much stuff from so many people it's hard to really know what to do. I would appreciate some imput on this. Thanks NORT

This is the best thing you can do for your motor.Yes,it forces all oil to go through your oil filter at all times. On a typical SBC oil will bypass the filter at low pressures (less than 20 psi) when cold on start up,feeding your motor unfiltered oil.I ran the Red Baron aluminum filter mount (part #812-RB102 from http://www.jegs.com ) on my new motor when I built it,but you can buy a 1/4" pipe plug(I believe),tap the hole out and put the plug in your stock adapter to get the same results.Just remeber, since ALL oil is now filtered at ALL times,no high revs when the motor is cold. There will be a lot of pressure on the filter when the oil is cold, and if revved high can explode the filter.I run the Fram HP4 on my motor which has a higher burst strength than regular oil filters, cause of its steel shell,as opposed to sheet metal shell of regular oil filters.I highly recommend this to anyone building a motor. It is one of the best no performance mods you can do to extend your motor's life.
