engine removal
hey i just finished removeing my engine out of my 89GTA. i couldnt find any bolts that were long enough to keep the engine tightly against the engine stand, is it ok to have about an inch of slack bettween the engine and the engine stand? the bolts dont seem to be bending and it holds it alright, but i dunno.... i had to return the engine hoist yesterday because i didnt want to face late charges. its possible for me to jack the engine up a bit on the stand and change one bolt at a time makeing it tight, but is it really a problem? right now im gona try rebuild the engine (change piston rings, timeing chain, headgaskets, berings, blah blah blah.....) so any pointers? :lala: :hail:

try cutting some tubing to act as a spacer between the engine and the stand, or fill up the gap with washers. it's not really safe to just put all that weight onthe threads and bolts. it would suck huge to have that motor fall on your feet or something.

alright, im at the point right now where i need special tools. do i really need a ridge reemer to take out that little brass ring at the top of the cylendars? how much does the tool cost in canadian dollars? is it easy to put them (or new ones) back on the "ridge"? and i need some sort of a puller to get the vibration dampener off right? can it be done without one? how much does that tool cost in canadian dollars? any help would be GREATLY appreciated. :hail:

help?
ok, what is the best way to protect my newly dissasembled engine/parts from rusting? ive noticed slight rust on the cylinder walls and i really really cant aford to do anything really expensive. whats the best way to protect the engine from rust, and what is the best way to remove the existing rust? its not much, just a few streaks near the ridge. but i gota act fast otherwize the rust could get worse. should i pour engine oil over every part of the engine? or wd40? and as a seperate topic.... how much does a ridge reemer cost? and a puller for the vibration dampener?

NOt sure how things are around you, but, here in Michigan, you can "rent" tools from some of the local autoparts stores. They have a really wide selection of toys, er, tools, just leave a deposit, and get your money back when you return the tool...
Or, there are also places that rent just about anything you want. From rigdge reamers, to tree trimming trucks.
If that fails, a machine shop will do the work for you, at less than the cost of buying the tools for yourself.
Personally, I don't see the point of buying expensive tools that you will not use regularly. Spending the money on a ridge reamer that you may use twice in your lifetime is not a good plan......

I rebuilt an engine from a 95 turbo Talon. Soooo.....
Can't help you with the dampener pulley but as far as the ridge reamer...I didn't bother. You only need to get one if you can't get the pistons out of the cylinders. Mine, with a little finesse, came out fine. After that I just honed, re-ringed, blah blah blah.
To keep the rust out of my block I soaked a rag in clean motor oil and wiped everything that I didn't want rusting. I did that every day until I put it back together.
