Head Games

Will pull the 305 in my 91 Z/28 soon.

Will either build a 350 or 383. 10.25 CR max.

I have been looking at the AFR heads from the 195 to the 210. It seems to me that the only significant flow difference is on the exaust side after the heads have been ported.

I have looked at various engine builds and have the specks for 3 for a 350 that will make 506, 520, and 527 hp respectively. THese engines all used flat tops and the AFR 190 heads roller cams and Vic Jr.s Peak power occurred at less than 6600 rpms in all cases.

Any head suggestions. Im leaning toward the AFR vs Dart, Brodix, Canfield, etc.

I will use a T-10 close ratio trans after the swap. The car will retain full interior and AC. If the car will not run low 12s I will be disoppointed.

More flow=more power. I'd get the biggest flowing heads I could afford. I hope you're not putting the TPI back on it, because you'll never see anything over 300HP. Go with a carb to go fast.

I wouldn't, plus heads dont vary price to price that much, so if you can afford one, you can afford them all. The biggest flowing heads are always going to be the ones with the biggest cc numbers, but the bigger the cc numbers, the lower the mixture velocity is going to be. This mean little torque, if any.

Are you getting those numbers off of DeskTop Dyno? If so, good for you, you could easily tune your torque curve to your t-10. I mean, if you build an 600 hp engine that makes it's power from 4000-7000 rpm, and your tranny shifts your rpm from 5500-2500 going from 1st to 2nd, you are going to shift right out of your power, and lose a lot of momentum, and not even hit your peak power spot. This is why lesser is beter in terms of CCs in heads. The lower the numbers the more low end torque, and the better Et.

Low et's are all about HP, but if you plan to do any street driving you need the mid range power! If you dont, chuck it out the window, and your Et's will thank you. If you do this than get rid of the 350 combo, the 350 is a street bore/stroke combo, a 302 or 377 will serve you much better.

Bubba,

You mentioned most of the common aftermarket head names, but not Pro Action. Have you checked out their offerings?

Their Iron Lightning heads have some very nice flow ratings right out of the box, and have a fairly flat torque curve (GPS).

The difference between say... $850 dollar TrickFlows and 1500 dollar AFRs is QUITE noticeable. Some folks might not be able to afford DOUBLE the amount to get AFRs.
