homemade fuel injection

how hard is it to make a fuel injection system, can I just take a intake manafold and tap it for injector holes, what else needs to be done, and whats the cost, I want to link my car to a laptop eventually, I have a stock carbed lg4, but will be putting in a 350 some day.

you could always set up a TBI system...

Hook up 50PSI of fuel pressure to a few injectors, ground them when the engine is running and hope it doesn't run like a$$ (flood, detonate, ect)

You'd need a way to measure air coming into the engine to decide how much fuel to deliver... at the very least.

You'd probably be better to ship out a few hundred to buy a TPI unit and harness... you could easily spend twice a TPI on R&D for your own system that runs half decent.

There is a unit out there that is custom made by some guys... I don't have the link but I'm sure someone else does... I havn't heard anything about it though, except it's a kit, and they sell it...

if you want to go to efi, check the classified board. people are selling both tpi and tbi systems. try to get a complete system as it won't nicle and dime you to death. also look for a system that is supported by the software programs. check out the diyprom board to see what years are good.

Neko,

Some people have adapted aftermarket intake to fuel injection. You would need to machine for the injectors, mount a fuel rail, acquire an ECM and wiring, mount all the necessary sensors, etc.

If you don't necessarily NEED port fuel injection and a dry intake, you can mount one, two, three, or FOUR TBI units to a dual-quad or tri-power or 4x2 intake and use the IAC and TPS from only one of the throttle bodies. You would have to carefully mechanically synchronize the multiple throttle, but you could drive all six injectors from the two outputs of the ECM and have a ton of flow if you wanted.

I have been toying with this Tri-Power TBI idea for my Sonoma truck, since TPI isn't going to work well with a lightweight vehicle with a 4.10 rear gear set, and the existing PCM will drive all the injectors easily (it already drives four of them).

Offenhauser, Weiand, Edelbrock, and GMPP all offer at least three-carb intakes, and Offy has the quad two-barrel intakes for SBCs (P/N 5263).

These could all be TBI units instead of carbs:

I thought you couldn't drive more injectors over stock effectively in high RPM's because the voltage wasn't enough when you hooked them all together

well I'm looking to go with a twin turbo set up, so I was thinking what the best way to do it, although the tripowered tbi is a cool idea theres no way to hook up my turbos. I saw a while back someone had taken an intake manafold drilled 8 holes in it for injectors and put a throttle body on where the carb would sit, it looked really clean, but where do the vaccum lines hook up. man maybe I'll just stick with my q-jet and build an air box for it.
