Seat and carpet installation (jack?)
Seat and carpet installation (jack?)
How should I get the car off the ground so i can take the seats off when i don't have a hydraulic lift? What do you recommend besides me crossing my fingers with a jack holding the car up? Should I just drive up onto blocks? or are there things I can rent from a garage.

Just curious to see why you need to jack the car up to take the seats and carpet out? I didnt have to.
But to answer your question, jack the car up, then put jack stands underneath, or something to hold it up.

hmmm
My friend told me that he needed to jack up his car to take the seats and carpet out, because there were bolts that went throught the car. But that was a sixties dart. How do you do the carpet/seat switch for an 86 camaro? It is my spring break project. That and new door panels, dash, sunvisors, and maybe if I can squeeze in a headliner reapolstering job by a professional.

nope, I just did it a couple months ago. you'll see that four bolts mount the front seats in, I think they were like 9/16. Then in back there is a single bolt that hold in each butt cushion. Its right in the middle of each cusion. after that you can get in and get the back seat back rest out. Then you have to pull out the middle consoul which is the hard part. just keep hunting around until you find all the screws. I actually had to pull out the back ashtray from the thing and get some screws that way. the carpet will just pull up after you get the seats, seatbelt mounts, and consoul out of the thcar. The seatbelt mounts all use torx bolts, so be careful with those or strip out. When you put in the fresh carpet make sure that it sits outside for a while to get all the wrinkles out.
Remember with the door stuff that all of some of the trim "bolts" are just decoration.
=edit= the reason you might not be able to see the bolts for the front seats is because we have little covers that are held in with phillips head screws.
Good luck man,
Mike

Yup burtblues is right. I just did all of that myself, except I died my carpet, which turnd it a real dark purple instead of black like I wanted it to be. So I will be doing it all over again, except this time I will replace the carpet, and add some 4th gen. seats.

yeah Rick, I put in the 4th gen power seats. They are so much more comfortable than the third gen ones. A little more work since I didn't have power seats originally, but worth the work.
you'll love the 4th gen seats, they hold you so much tighter...

Luckily I already have the power seats so it'll be 1.2.3.

13 mm on all the seat bolts, and it really helps if you have one of those gear wrenches.
I've done it 3 times already. And whenever I find time I'm going for round 4 with my new carpet.

The seats are bolted to studs on the floor. To get the carpet out you need (in a long deary voice) the panels out, then the seat belts, then the consol, then the shifter, then ect.... You get the point, boring jobs, and kinda tough.
Your friend is right that some seats are unbolted from the bottom of the car, but only stupid companies, like Ford, do this. They are major rust magnets.
