Carbed IROC

I have just bought an 86 IROC with a 4bbl. is there any way to changeit over to F.I. or not ? Would I have to get the intake, fuel injection and computer,or is it too much aggrevation,or just not worth it ? The car runs OK, but not too much get-up out of the hole. It'll chirp second I think someone rebuilt the tranny and put in a shift kit because it dumps into gear pretty hard and quick , there's also 3'' SS Borla exhaust on it , which I guess helps . Any feedback would be appreciated . Marty

You don't need to change to FI for get up, that's not the weak part of the motor.. You've got the horrible LG4 the weakest motor. That's what I had. All you have to do is get some headers, change the cam, and do some head work and you'll have some get up. Those gears aren't helping you either (2:73s). You already have an computer whether it will handle FI I don't know. Good luck, and maybe someone else can point you in another direction. Oh, the chirping 2nd, I would check your TV cable to make sure it is properly adjusted. Go to the tranny board do a search and follow transfixleo's method.

I think the TV cable is OK cause it shifts nice whenever you drive it normally , it just shifts hard whenever you pound it a little bit . I just bought the car yesterday and I like it so far , just bought it for a project/tinker toy. It looks like the one in your picture except it has gold interior, decals, and striping. I picked it up for $900.00 it is a stole recovery, and needs some cosmetic work, wheels, column, etc. I really don't have tons of money to put in it, but I think it will be fun to mess with.

Well, if you go putting FI on, you will wind up spending a lot more getting it running any better than you would if you improve on what you've got. Carbs can assist in making plenty o' power.

Carbs make just as much power as FI, so don't let your uninformed peers tell you otherwise. Do what Mark said. You'll be doing mid-14s easy, and with some real tuning might even close in on high-13s

I prefer efi over carbs but if i had already had a carb engine i wouldn't bend over backwards to convert it over to efi. The tpi setup definately has limits and it costs $$$ to upgrade it, and aftermarket efi systems are very pricey. this is of course on top of installing it, wiring it up and interfacing the wiring with existing wiring (as said before you already have a computer and such) and keeping it smog legal. Lucky me both my rides already have fuel injection.

Thanks for your input, I guess I'll just try to tinker with it and just have some fun. The basics are there so I guess I don't have anything to complain about, I had a 96 T/A and it ran like a raped ape, I guess I was just dreaming to think this 305 was going to be somewhat close to that. Oh well for what I paid for the IROC, would only be 2.5 payments on the T/A. I'm still trying to find parts for the IROC, in the Pittsburgh area, any hints on where to go, or who to call, since all the swap meets don't begin until May or June ?

I was kind of in the same boat when I was going to buy my IROC. I thought ALL IROC's had 350TPI. I was disappointed to find that mine had 305TBI. I'm happy with my 383 and TBI to carb conversion.

Good luck with your project.
