Problem starting car - distributor related?
Problem starting car - distributor related?
I have a 86 Camaro with a LG4. I replaced the original quadrajet carb with a holley 600, and replaced the original distributor with one from a junkyard (came off of a 1980 station wagon w/ vacuum advance). When I parked the car for the winter (with gas) around 5-6 months ago, it ran fine. No problems at all.
The only thing I did to the car that would affect this is over the winter I replaced the plug wires. The old ones were starting to burn, so I took them back and got new ones. I'am 100% sure that I replaced them correctly.
Today I tried starting my car (after replacing the battery, bah), it would crank over, but not start. Several attempts to start it turned out futile. I touched each header on the car and only the header coming off the #1 cylinder was warm. I assume this means only the #1 cylinder was firing.
My friend informed me that there is a gear in the distributor that moves the rotor and they go bad sometimes. He said this would cause only the #1 cylinder to spark if it was "stuck" on that one. I figured I would try to elimate the distributor as the problem, so I swapped in the original (stock) distributor. I realize with no computer I would get no ignition advance over idle, but I'am under the impression the car would still start with this distributor despite the lack of the computer.
Once again, it kept turning over, but wouldn't start. Puzzled, I once again felt each header. This time, only the #8 cylinder header was warm, so I'am assuming that was the only cylinder firing. In frustration, I put the vacuum advance distributor back in, but the car would still not start.
The spark plugs are new, the car has gas, and when it was parked it was running fine. Right now, I'am out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
