The tach wire connects to the distributor near the back, not sure if you have HEI or Points, and not sure if that matters or not.. The temp gauge should connect to the side of the block, not sure where on that motor.

I dont know about all guages, but the auto-meter guages go on the NEGATIVE of the coil. if you have HEI distributor there is still a coil, somtimes sitting next to it, (89 Camaro etc..) or in the dist. itself....
Maybe I can help some.
With regards to the Tach, you should find a White wire coming from the D6 pin on the Bulkhead Connector (at the firewall), the wire should be hanging somewhere behind the engine. Don't know what ignition that you're using but some of the GM distributors have a connection in the cap. (See slso King's reply above).
As far as the Temperature Gauge is concerned, you should find a Green wire coming from the F7 pin on the Bulkhead Connector and will likely find it laying around the Driverside. This wire connects to a Temperature Sender that fits in a 3/8" pipe thread hole between #1 & #3. If you only have a pipe plug in that position, I don't know why you couldn't just buy a sender for an '86. It's a single wire connection. The tip probably looks like the head of a small nail or could be a blade.
The wire for the Oil Preessure Gauge (Tan) comes from the E6 pin of the Bulkhead Connector and you should find it laying in back of the engine near the distributor. It connects to a sender mounted in a 1/8" pipe plug hole at the rear edge of the block, just a couple of inches from the Dist., drivers side. Again, if there is nothing there but a pipe plug I don't know why you couldn't just by one for an 86. Now, if you are still computer controlled and using an in-tank fuel pump, it gets a little more complicated. Let us know on that point.
Hope this helped some.
