Fuel pump problem, please offer suggestions
I went to start the car the other day (92, 305TBI) and it wouldn't start
. I noticed the lack of that priming Wrrrrrr from the fuel pump. However, when I turned it off, waited 5 secs, and tried again, it fired up. It does this occationally (1 of 3 starts I'd say). Sometimes, it gives a code 54 (fuel pump circuit problem).
I figured i'd start by changing the relay, but that did not fix the problem.
Soooo, since the pump only fails to start sometimes, rather than dying while the car is running, I'm assuming their are no bad connections.
I'm hoping to find something wrong OTHER than the fuel pump, what do you all think it can be?
Thanks

Truck,
Well, you took away the easy call. I would have guessed the relay right off.
All I can suggest is that you check the wiring at the relay socket and ECM. The ECM monitors the fuel pump system voltage from the relay terminal 'A' to ECM terminal 'B2' (assuming you have the 746 ECM for TBI). The ECM will expect a 12VDC+ (+/- 3.8V) signal as soon as the ignition is turned ON.
The ECM also monitors the fuel pump relay coil from ECM terminal 'A1' to relay terminal 'C'. If the ECM does not detect the correct resistance range for a load at this terminal, you'll set a DTC 54. If you get the DTC as soon as you turn on the ignition, you may have the incorrect replacement relay, or the connections between the relay and ECM have some resistance. Of course, all of this is dependent upon a good ground reference for the ECM and engine, so don't overlook the ground connections.
