Oil Pump questions

After dropping a bolt into one of the cam valley oil holes, I have been given the opportunity to replace my stock oil pump with a high volume oil pump for 20 bucks. I have spoken with other people who said that the oil pump shouldn't fail, but I want the potential extra protection of more oil flow. How much & what kind of benefit will I see?

Thanks,

Clint

You will see negative benefit. There is no point in putting a HV oil pump on a motor with stock oil flow characteristics (cross-drilled crank, extra oil delivery to the timing chain, 360° grooved main & rod bearings, etc.); all that will happen is that the same amount of oil will flow through the motor as ever (putting a different pump on doesn't increase the passage diameter or anything), and all the extra oil that the pump moves will simply foam up the oil in the pan from constant churning. And, it puts about twice as much load on the distributor gear, which wears it out much quicker and uses up horsepower for no reason.

If you want to refresh your oil pump, I would recommend a plain old M55; replace the spring with a Mr. Gasket 26, which will give you about 55 lbs cruising; a new pickup to fit your pan (probably a 55-S); and a drive rod with a steel sleeve instead of a plastic one, either a IS-55E, or one from Moroso or some other of the speed people. The reason I recommend the steel sleeved shaft is that the only oil pump failure I have ever experienced was the weenie plastic one breaking, and the connection between the rod and the pump geting destroyed, which has happened to me or people I know twice.

On a mild/stock motor I think you'd be better off with a standard volume pump.It takes quite a bit more power to turn the hi-volume units.
Most small-block race guys I know are using stock pumps they've blueprinted and are using hi-pressure spring from GM.
As far as aftermarket brands go, Melling is probably the most commonly available stock replacement, and they're reasonably priced.
Moroso sells blueprinted units that are great, but quite a bit more pricey.Part#22112 is about $90,but is an excellent pump.
#22100 is a good pump, but not blueprinted for about $56.
Get a good oil pump drive too, Moroso #22070 is $12.Similar drives are available from ARP,Milodon, etc.

I hate to overload the "bandwagon", but RB is as right as he usually is. The only reason to go with an HV pump is if you add oil flow, like timing chain oiler nozzles, valve spring cooling oil manifolds, piston rod spray holes (truck engines), etc. These require extra oil flow, and can use a high volume pump. Other than that...

Wow. I am glad I posted before making a mistake like that. Thanks for the part leads, and the great advice.

91,

No problem on the advice.

Nice avatar - But would Burt really want to have his portrait taken with Ernie's asshöle? Besides, Burt is made of felt and stuffing, and therefore has an I.Q. about ten times that of his "counterpart" there....

HV oil pump

WOW! it's refreshing to see the word is finally getting out.
The only one to benefit from the HV pump on a stock motor is the manufacturer. (or the guy selling it)
