What engine to install? L98 or Crate

I will be installing a new powerplant in the near future and don't know if I should have my already original stock L98 rebuilt from a shop or get a GM crate. Does anything in particular make the L98 different from your basic GM350? I don't race a hell of lot, just cruise and have fun (hot rodding) with it now and then. I saw a good price for a 300HP 350 crate; would having my stock motor rebuilt cost about the same as the crate price?

I say go with whatever is cheaper. You can get the ZZ shortblock for under $2K, which is pretty cheap, and comes with good components. Would you buy a new rotating assembly if you went with the L98 rebuild? It all depends on what you want out of our build up. I would personally go with a crate motor.

If emissions are a problem, I say stick with what you got. I don't see how a crate could be cheaper since you already have the block. It shouldn't take much to get it runnin good, free flow exhaust, TPI mods, gears, TC, headwork and a better cam, and you'll be in the low 13s easy.
