Engine question

Sorry in advance, I know this isnt third gen related (well, it sorta is...). Anyways, I want a 350. Bad. Plus, I want a car in better condition than mine (so that rules out a crate engine...). I was thinking a Caprice w/ a 350, or a Impalla SS, but I heard insurance is insane on impalla's with the LT1 (collector car, or something like that, i dunno...). My non third gen question is did caprices ever come with LT1's, or just L05's?? To relate it to third gen, say I was to go look fer nice RS/base firebird (I say RS cuz IROC/Z28/formula/TA to much insurance). Maybe v6, maybe 305, maybe 4 banger, what ever. and i was to drop a crate in...how much should I be looking to pay fer a thirdgen with a PERFECT, I mean flawless body? I have looked around, and, hell, there just arent many fer sale around me to reference! (which prolly isnt a good sign...)

$1-268,

Pre-1994 Caprices had either the 305 or 350 TBI engines, or the 256 V-6 as a base engine. Even the SEO/police vehicles had no special engines until 1994 - just the 350 TBI that sacrificed 65HP and 35 ft/lb from the LT1.

There were a few different Caprice models that came out of Arlington with LT1 engines between 1994-96. The SEO vehicles - both 9C1 Caprice police/government cars, and the taxis that were ordered with LT1s. Very few taxis were ordered with the LT1, since most got the smaller L99 that got a little better mileage. Even some of the 9C1 cars came with this 265-inch "Baby LT1", the L99. Many Caprice station wagons had the LT1 engine, as did the Buick Roadmasters, Estate Wagons, and Olds Custom Cruiser wagons. Of course, nearly all of the Impala SS models got the LT1, with the exception of the few test cars that got the 502-inch BBC and a couple of LT4s in 1996. You won't likely find any of those for sale in your local paper, however.

Insurance on an SS isn't too bad. It costs me about $474 a year for full coverage on my '86 TA (with a replacement cost rider). The '94 SS is actually $3.96 CHEAPER to insure for full replacement coverage, and the '96 SS is only about $60 more.

It helps to be older than the galaxy you live in... You can get pretty good rates when you can call your insurance agent "Sonny"...
