Water in gas? Timing?
Water in gas? Timing?
Hi-
I'm having a problem with my 89 Formula 305 TBI Auto. The car sputters and backfires when I step on the gas. It did this so bad that it stalled out several times today. Then the car will not start and acts like there is no gas getting to it or it has no spark. When I pump the gas the car finally starts but runs terribly and backfires when I step on the gas. It idles perfectly.
After putting a couple bottles of drygas in the fuel tank, I got the car home (barely) and let it idle for a while, hopin there is water in the gas. After idling for a bit, I took the car out and it ran great. So I figured "great, I'm done" But nothing is that easy I guess. I took the car out and it ran fine for a mile or so and then started sputtering and backfiring again. After running the car for about 20 miles to try to run the fuel through it, the car ran well again, Now it's not running well again.
Sooo... my question is what could this be? Is my thinking that it is a fuel problem correct or could it be timing, etc (plugs, cap, rotor, wires are all new.) Please, any input is appreciated.
