blue smoke

hey guys, I have a 88 iroc-z convertible that I just bought. It has 108,000 miles on a 5.0 TPI/T5 tranny and I've begun to see some blue smoke on start up. It happens only when it sits a while. It also can be hard to start when I've warmed it up and shut it down for about a half an hour. Requires a little pedal to start it at that piont.
Blue smoke equals oil right? If that's the case than is it leaking from the valve seals? You could eat off the engine, it's been well kept. No leaks of any kind. There's no other time it smokes at all! Just on the times that I've explained. The guy that had the car has used 5/30 wieght oil. He said that anything heavier would cause the seals to blow on the oil cooler (factory installed). Is that true? If not could a change in oil help the problem? Thanks, Jason

Yes you are correct.

Changing oil weight will not help. IMO 5w 30 is the oil to use

My car does the blue smoke number too at start up. It is the valve seals that are leaking. What happens is as the engine gets cold the seals shrink allowing oil to drip into the combustion chamber. When you fire it up the oil burns off. Once the engine is warm the seals expand and do their job. If you notice your car probably doesn't smoke on a warm start up. It is a universal GM engine thing. Just check your oil level and make sure it is not losing a lot. Mine uses very little oil and there isn't much coating on the spark plugs so I am just going to leave it be until I can afford to get it done.
