eternal,

You were told correctly. The detonation (knock) sensor is supposed to detect preignition or spark knock and is there to protect the engine from destroying itself from excesive timing advance. The error code is for a problem with the sensor signal. It may just be disconnected of have poor connections. The sensor is near the starter on the lower right side of the engine, threaded into the cylinder case. You can unplug and inspect the electrical connectiony for corrosion, damage, etc. Without a functioning sensor, the ECM will revert to base timing tables and not advance the ingition timing much at all. You will lose performance and fuel mileage until this is repaired, but it shouldn't do any damage. If for some reason the ignition timing does get advanced, you will no longer have the automatic protection of the sensor, however, and will risk damage from detonation. At least check the connections for now.
