About to order parts, please give me opinions...

Okay, I am this close to ordering parts for my trans am. It is an 84. I am swapping the LG-4 305 for a 1971 350/270 gross horse w/8.5:1 compression. This motor is out of a blazer full size. Motor is going to have a holley street dominator high rise manifold dual plane up top with a CCC carb. I hope to swap rods and hangers on it. I currently have a hooker cat back and a gutted cat. Motor has an edelbrock performer cam currently with .424/.442 lift @.50 and i dont know more off the top of my head. Car has functional cowl induction with open element air filter. That is what is currently in my possession. Car is 3.23 Posi with 700R4.

I plan on getting:

Comp Cam XE262 cam. Says rev range of 1300-5600, seems to be right around what I want, and Ive heard good things about the Xtreme energy cams. I'm just concerned about the motors 8.5:1 compression ratio with this much cam.

Hedman Shorty Hedders and Y-pipe. These seem to be the cheapest ones around with 1 5/8" primaries and I dont need the A.I.R. hookups because my smog pump is seized anyway.

B&M Trans Go shift kit (I think, its the one for like $35). I just want to firm up my shifts. Im saving for a rebuild now, as with 140,000 miles on the tranny, its going to happen sooner or later. I t would also be cool to chirp second.

That's all I have the cash for right now. This was the bargain project. Car was $250, my father did the paint, and I have very little invested now besides time. I plan on a torque converter as my next mod, and hopefully heads within a year. I'm trying to keep my price for a swap in the
$450 range with headers and a cam. How do you guys think this setup will work? I really appreciate it, please help me from making the wrong desicion

sounds fine from there, the cam is without a doubt no problem. i've ran way bigger with that much compression. as for the rest, sounds fine, really.

I wouldn't put the cash on the B&M Shift Improver Kit. If you're buying the B&M TransPak for the 700r4, that one is just a Shift Improver Kit that comes with a new trans filter! (Might be different for other trannies, but not for the 700r4.) The B&M kits are known to increase wear on the trans; the preferred kit of choice is the TransGo one- but it's about $130 thru Summit Racing.

I have a B&M Shift Improver Kit though, and while I'm on my 2nd replacement transmission, I don't know if the kit caused it. When this trans goes (and it seems soon, but it was like that since it was rebuilt), I'm rebuilding a junkyard one ON MY OWN (I can't do much worse than the other guys who did my trans!), and putting the TransGo kit in.

An external trans cooler (B&M Supercooler) might help your trans last a bit longer. Don't have your '84 700r4 rebuilt, buy an 87-up 700r4 from a junkyard, and have the junkyard one rebuilt! GM did a lot of revisions to the 700r4's design thru the years- one of which is a stronger input shaft. The 700r4 went from a 27 spline input shaft to a 30 spline input shaft in '85! More things happend thru the years, the trans board has more specifics on that.
